Methodist Girls, Akrostech win 67th Independence Inter-Schools Tug Of War Championship in Koforidua

The 67th Independence Inter-Schools Tug Of War Championship came off as part of activities preceding the celebration of Ghana’s 67th Independence Day in the Eastern Region.

The two-day long event which took place at Koforidua Senior High Technical School started on Thursday the 29th of February and ended on Friday the 1st of March 2024.

The championship featured Twenty (20) schools, with each school represented by a team of 8 pullers plus 3 reserves, pulling each other to determine who wins the Championship Trophy for their school.

  3. Akrosu Senior High Technical School,
  4. Suhum Presbyterian Senior High School,
  5. New Juaben Senior High School,
  6. S.D.A Senior High School,
  7. Oyoko Methodist Senior High School,
  8. St. Roses Senior High School,
  9. Larteh Presbyterian Senior High Technical School,
  10. Pentecost Senior High School,
  11. Suhum Senior High Technical School,
  12. Ghana Senior High School,
  13. Pope Johns Senior High School,
  14. Aburi Senior High Technical School,
  15. Islamic Girls Senior High School,
  16. Adukrom Presbyterian Senior High Technical School
  17. Mampong Presbyterian Senior High School,
  18. Methodist Girls Senior High School,
  19. Mmanfe Senior High School and
  20. Ofori Panin Senior High School.

Over 5000 students (spectators) came to witness the event, supporting and cheering their school onto victory.

At the end of the event in the ladies division Methodist Girls’ Manfe emerged as the champions, securing the first position with Akrosu Senior High Technical School taking the second position and Suhum Presbyterian High School placing third.

In the Boys’ Division, Akrosu Senior High Technical School emerged as Champions and Mampong Presbyterian Senior High School came second followed by Aburi Senior High Technical School which placed third.

The various winning teams were giving medals and trophies as well as products from sponsors.

Dignitaries who came to support and witness the event included Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs Ivy Asankwa Owusu, the former Headmaster of Oti Boateng Senior High School (OBOSS), Mr Arthur, the Director of Physical Education Programme, Mr Mike Ayeh, former Physical Education Coordinator for Bono Region, Ntow Samuel, the former Central Regional Sports Development Officer, Mr Osafo Agyei RTD, the Eastern Regional Physical Education Coordinator, Mrs Nancy Mensah RTD), Board Chairman of Koforidua Senior High Technical  School, Rev. Prof. Charles Ansah, the former Headmaster of Ofori Panyin Senior High School (OPASS) who is also the Eastern Regional Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Schools (CHASS),  Mr John Kofi Beantey, the Eastern Regional Chairman of Ghana Tug of War (GHATOWA), Mr Kofi Sarpong Boateng.

Other dignitaries included the Headmistress of St. Roses, Madam Esi Jackson, Headmistress of SDA shs, Madam Naomi, the Headmaster of Koforidua Senior High Technical  School, Mr Ofori Antwi, Headmaster of Pope Johns Senior High School, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Opoku Ohene, Headmistress Krobo Girls Senior High School, Mrs Bernice Mensah Agutey, Headmistress Njuasco, Mrs Georgina Oti Frimpong, Headmistress of Islamic Girls Senior High School, Mrs Hajia Safia Salifu, Assistant Headmistress of Nsutam Senior High School, Mrs Kande Duplex, and the Assistant Headmaster of Pope Johns Senior High School, Mr Dan Kwaku Duplex..

Special awards were given to some Physical Education Teachers, Headmistress and Headmaster for promoting sports in the Eastern Region, especially Tug Of War.

The event was organized by the Ghana Tug Of War Association (GHATOWA) in collaboration with Ghana Education Service, Eastern Region and Dreamland Sports Plus; with support from Dano Milk, Verna, Yomi Yoghurt and Indomie.
