The Bolgatanga High Court has revoked the arrest warrant for Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Nayiri of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, and his kingmakers.

This comes just a few days after the same court issued the warrant requested by Lieutenant Colonel Ajibadeck Bemjamin Baba (Rtd), who had asked the court to order the arrest of the paramount chief after he was imprisoned.

As a consequence of this, the court amended the previous ex parte motion, which is now referred to as “hereby rescinded under the inherent jurisdiction of the High Court.”

It was speculated that the chief’s arrest was connected to the illegal and condemned enskining of a new chief for Bawku on February 15 at the Mamprugu overlord’s palace.

Alhaji Seidu Abagre, who was enshrined as the new chief of Bawku by the Nayiri despite the recognition of Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the overlord of Bawku, was also ordered to be arrested by the warrant.

According to reports, the military personnel tasked with carrying out the order to arrest failed to complete their task because they were stopped by a group of irate teenagers in Nalerigu.

The youth are alleged to have erected roadblocks on February 19 night.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Information, the government said that the enskinment of a new Bawku Naba in Nalerigu was illegal. “The Government condemns developments in Nalerigu today February 15, 2023, concerning the purported enskinment of a new Bawku Naba as illegal and a threat to National Security,” the statement read.

In addition, the government stated in the statement that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the Bawku Naaba, and is a member of the National and Upper East Regional Houses of Chiefs, and has been properly gazetted.
