The honourable member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa debunked claims by communicators and sympathisers of the NPP Government that the British Commissioner’s tweet was against international law.

“Claims by some commentators that Ghanaian and other African diplomats abroad cannot share their views on matters they feel strongly about in those jurisdictions are totally false.

1) On 13th January, 2018 — the African Group of UN Ambassadors publicly addressed the press in New York condemning in the strongest terms possible reports that President Donald Trump had referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as “shithole.” They called out President Trump as a racist and demanded an apology. Interestingly, H.E. Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Ghana’s Ambassador to the UN at the time, read the statement on behalf of African Ambassadors;

2) On 13th April, 2020 — African Ambassadors in China wrote to the Chinese Foreign Minister and copied the press, protesting blatant discrimination against Africans during COVID-19 restrictions;

3) On 29th May, 2020 — a growing list of African Ambassadors, African Presidents including ours, the African Union Commission’s Moussa Faki Mahamat and Ambassador Kwesi Quartey all condemned the abhorrent killing of George Floyd in multiple statements;

4) On 1st March, 2022 — South African Ambassador to Ukraine, H.E. Andre Groenewald spoke to journalists condemning Ukrainian border security officials for discriminating against African students trying to escape the conflict. This was before the African Union issued a statement denouncing the development.

These are only a few recent examples, it doesn’t help to portray Ghanaian and other African diplomats as voiceless and worthless to make it convenient in taking aim at western diplomats.

Ironically, those launching the current attacks saw nothing wrong in time past when western diplomats were most critical of governments they didn’t support. We must always be principled and consistent.
