Football Star Micheal Essien has lost close to a million followers on Twitter after the Ex Ghana Footballer pledged his support for homosexuals in Ghana.
There has been arguments for and against homosexuality in Ghana.
Whiles some persons have argued that they have their right which cannot be curtailed, others have argued that homosexuality cannot be seen as rights of individuals because legalizing their activities will be detrimental to the development of the country.
The President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at a ceremony indicated that he will not legalize same sex marriage in the country.
“I have said this before, let me in conclusion stress again, that it will not be under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that same-sex marriage will be legal, that same-sex marriage will be legalized in Ghana, it will never happen in my time as President.”
“Let me repeat, it will never happen in my time as President,” President Akufo-Addo stressed.
However, a number of prominent Ghanaians who live in the diaspora have in a letter called for the rights of homosexuals to be protected.
Michael Essien in a post he shared on his social media said “We see you, we hear you, we support you. Our LGBTQIA plus Community in Ghana,” indicating that Ghana supports equality.
Ghanaians world over have since subjected the ex-football star to insults and cyber bullying and have unfollowed him on his various social media handles.
A visit to Michael Essien’s Twitter page realized the page which was having 1.7 million followers now has 688,000 followers and it keeps reducing by the minute.
The conversation on LGBTQI came to the fore after the community in Ghana illegally secured an office space where they would address issues bothering their members. The office has since been closed down by the National Security.
