We have nothing against the street decongestion exercise – GUTA

Edward Atobrah Binkley, Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA), has stated that although there was no prior engagement between his outfit and the Mayor of Accra regarding the ongoing street decongestion exercise across the city, GUTA supports the initiative.

According to him, the Association only became aware of the exercise earlier this morning.

“We have nothing against the street decongestion exercise. We also want the safety of our traders and the safety of everyone involved,” he said on Onua FM on January 19.

Mr. Binkley explained that traders must return to their designated trading stations instead of selling on the streets, a practice often driven by the belief that sales increase when they move out of their assigned spaces.

In his view, “When we tell our families that we are going out to work, it is our sincere desire that we all return home safely at the close of day.”

He further advised that, going forward, proper communication and engagement with stakeholders would be necessary to ensure smoother operations and avoid unnecessary challenges.

Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the Mayor of Accra, has kicked off a major street decongestion exercise across the city as part of activities to commemorate National Sanitation Day.

The initiative is aimed at clearing unauthorised structures, easing congestion, and improving sanitation and safety on Accra’s major streets and walkways.

Residents are encouraged to support the effort as the city works towards cleaner streets and a more organised urban environment.
