Ewurabena Aubynn secures Ablekuma North Parlimantary seat for NDC

Ewurabena Aubynn

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made history in the Ablekuma North Constituency, with Ewurabena Aubynn winning the parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

This is only the second time since 1992 that the NDC has captured the traditionally NPP stronghold. The rerun in 19 polling stations followed months of legal and electoral disputes after the December 2024 general election.

Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the NPP’s Akua Afriyie, who received 33,881 votes. 411 of the ballots cast were rejected.

The declaration of the NDC’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, restores parliamentary representation to the Ablekuma North Constituency, which had been without an MP since the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The constituency had remained in limbo for over seven months due to a protracted legal and electoral dispute. However, the rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025, finally resolved the impasse.

The election day was not without incident. Tensions flared at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling centre, where unidentified individuals disrupted the process and reportedly assaulted Nana Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.

According to eyewitnesses, confusion erupted when the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, visited the polling station to observe the process.

Voting came to a halt at the Methodist Church Odorkor 1 polling station after some party agents breached the church premises.

The eyewitnesses indicated that the former lawmaker had initially visited the polling station to monitor proceedings but later returned, during which she defied police instructions to leave the centre.

They added that her refusal to exit the premises angered some party faithful who had been observing the process from outside the church, leading to an altercation.

Despite these disruptions, order was swiftly restored, and voting continued until the official closing time of 5 PM. Ballots were then sorted and counted, leading to the declaration of results.

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, along with other top NPP officials, is expected to visit the grieving family to commiserate and pay respects.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the former District Chief Executive of Denkyembour, Mr Seth Birikorang Ofosu, said, “Today is dedicated to welcoming sympathisers, loved ones, and party executives. We are deeply overwhelmed.”

Mr Kumi is survived by his wife and three children—two boys and a girl—aged 13, 10, and 7. The family revealed that the children were only informed of their father’s death on Tuesday morning. “We couldn’t break the news to them yesterday. We told them this morning, and it was unbearable,” Mr Ofosu added.

Affectionately called the Starboy of Akwatia, Ernest Kumi was known for his charisma, strong community engagement, and unwavering dedication to public service. He was widely admired by constituents for his accessibility, youthful energy, and efforts to bring development projects to Akwatia.

His passing marks the second time in recent memory that a sitting NPP MP from Akwatia has died in office, deepening the sense of loss for the community.

Further arrangements for his funeral are yet to be announced.
