MTN Cyber Breach: Analysts demand full accountability, stronger internal controls

The Cyber Security Expert Association of Ghana (CSEAG) has called on MTN Ghana to demonstrate full transparency and accountability following a recent cybersecurity breach that exposed the personal data of about 5,700 customers.

Describing the incident as “a grave event,” the association said the implications go beyond reputational damage and pose a direct threat to the trust millions of Ghanaians place in digital platforms.

“This is not just only about numbers or reputations—it’s about the personal data and trust of millions of Ghanaians,” the Association said in a statement.

The Ministry of Communications, alongside the Cyber Security Authority, the National Communications Authority, and the Data Protection Commission, have launched investigations into the breach. CSEAG is urging MTN to cooperate fully with regulators and provide timely, transparent updates to the public.

“Leadership means owning problems as well as successes. Ghanaian customers deserve a thorough explanation of what happened and why,” Issaka said.

The association has also raised concern over potential insider involvement in the breach, citing the Bank of Ghana’s 2024 Fraud Report which highlights a rise in staff-involved fraud across mobile money platforms, including MTN’s MoMo.

CSEAG is therefore urging MTN to conduct a full internal audit of staff with privileged access, strengthen its pre-employment screening process, and implement real-time monitoring to detect unusual employee activity.

“Cybersecurity is not merely a technical concern—it is a core leadership responsibility. Strong firewalls and encryption are important, but without top-down commitment, they can fail,” the statement added.

CSEAG wants MTN to invest in a permanent in-house team of cybersecurity professionals rather than relying on external consultants during crises. The association also advised MTN customers to remain vigilant by updating their apps, and using strong passwords

“This incident serves as a wake-up call. Ghana’s digital future depends on strong leadership, robust security practices, and the collective effort of all sectors,”

CSEAG reaffirmed its readiness to support MTN and all relevant agencies to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity ecosystem.

Meanwhile Mobile Money (MoMo) customers of MTN Ghana have been assured that their funds remain safe and secure. This comes despite reports of a recent cybersecurity incident affecting the wider MTN Group.

In a notice to customers, MTN clarified that no mobile money wallet has been compromised and urged the public to disregard any claims suggesting otherwise.
