The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned comments attributed to the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and Minister for Fisheries, Mavis Hawa Koomson. describing it as very insensitive and arrogant.

In a recent interview granted to Onua FM/ Onua TV by Hawa Koomson, who is also Dr. Bawumia’s Campaign Coordinator for the Coastal Belt, said people who are complaining about the cost of rent in Ghana should go to Canada.

In a press statement released by the Deputy Women Organiser of the party, Abigail Elorm Akwambea Mensah, the NDC expressed disappointment in the statement particularly as it is coming from a government a sitting member of Parliament, who should be concerned about the welfare of her constituents in general, and a member of Bawumia’s Campaign team.

Re: If you think Rent is expensive in Ghana, go to Canada and see – Hawa Koomson, minister of fisheries and aquaculture.

I have become aware of news reports with the above headline, curled from a recent interview granted to Onua FM/ Onua TV by the dis-honorable Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson.

In the said interview (with video evidence available), Hawa Koomson is heard calling the bluff of ordinary Ghanaians who are genuinely expressing their displeasure against the exorbitant cost of accommodation, especially in this excruciating economic hardship Ghanaians have been plunged into by the failed Akufo Addo-Bawumia government in which she serves as a Minister, to flee Ghana and move to Canada.

As a Woman, Wife, and most importantly a mother, one would have thought she would understand the plight of these young Ghanaians who are frustrated and suffering under this cruel administration of which she is part but as usual of them, the ordinary Ghanaian doesn’t matter.

This statement, I believe is very insensitive coming from a woman and born out of sheer arrogance; particularly so from a government and its assigns that literally begged Ghanaians to try them and see in 2016 and further hoodwinked them in 2020 under the deception of COVID-19 adversities and promised to support their rent payment, all of which they failed to honour.

The least such a government and its appointees can do is to be sensitive to the plight of ordinary voters and work towards improving their living conditions even as they prepare to hand over Political power in January 2025.

The Minister in question’s latest utterance is not too surprising to many Ghanaians as it only adds up to a plethora of despicable comments made by her over the last 7 years, including beating up journalists. It reflects the general mentality and character trait of this NPP government and is evident in her latest appointment as Bawumia’s Campaign Coordinator for the Coastal Belt, even after she has been blacklisted by the media for her such un-ministerial acts and behaviour.

The NDC empathizes with ordinary Ghanaians who are genuinely demanding better living conditions and particularly, asking for cheaper cost of accommodation; and assures them that a JOHN Dramani MAHAMA government from January 7th 2025, will work at improving the living conditions across all sectors in order to help reduce the burden of accommodation cost imposed on Ghanaians.

Ironically, a government that cannot print Passport books for Ghanaian applicants because of incompetence, corruption and needless bureaucracy, is today calling the bluff of young Ghanaians and is asking them to flee the country if they deem rent cost to be expensive. Which document do they expect ordinary Ghanaians to travel with? Is it the passport or the Ghana Card?

Whiles calling on the arrogant MP and Minister to apologize to Ghanaians for her reckless and insensitive comments, we urge Ghanaians to have faith in JOHN MAHAMA and the NDC as we remain the most viable option going into election 2024 and beyond.

His Excellency JOHN MAHAMA will make living conditions better from January 2025 as President by implementing: His game-changing 24Hour Economy policy to create more decent and well paid jobs for our teeming unemployed youth, Free Primary Healthcare to make healthcare delivery accessible and affordable at the basic levels of society, the Big Push Agenda to improve the Nation’s industrialization drive, cancellation of Ex-gratia and payment of social services (fuel, TV subscriptions, etc) for Government Officials to reduce government expenditure, thereby saving the Nation millions of cedis; among other life-changing policies.

I believe every Ghanaian deserves a better living condition, and JOHN MAHAMA and the NDC will work towards that when voted into office in the 2024 General Elections.

God bless our homeland Ghana, the great NDC and make our nation great and strong!!!

Signed;

Abigail Elorm Akwambea Mensah
