The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said the Ministry of Youth and Sports budgeted $8.5 million (GH₵105 million) for the Black Stars’ campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

His disclosure followed calls for transparency before the tournament regarding the budget allocated for the national team’s participation.

Previously, the Ministry, through its Public Relations Officer Charles Amofah, declined to reveal the budget, stating that it was still “a work in progress.”

Reacting to the news, Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie, the Parliamentary Candidate in the Odododiodio Constituency lamented the level at which the Akufo Addo/Bawumia-led NPP Government has factored corruption into the day-to-day running of every aspect of the economy.

“Ghana’s corruption under Akufo Addo is monumental. We can’t keep them in power any longer. This is unacceptable when my people in Odododiodioo cannot get water constantly running through their taps.”

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the local chapter of Transparency International in its report said, “Ghana scored 43 out of a clean score of 100 and ranked 70th out of 180 countries and territories included in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023 released today, 30th January 2024 by Transparency International (TI). This marks the fourth consecutive year of stagnation in Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts, as indicated by the CPI.”

Transparency International attributed Ghana’s stagnation to the deteriorating justice system, which it says is reducing the accountability of public officials and therefore allowing corruption to thrive.

“Under the theme for the CPI 2023 – Corruption and Justice, Ghana’s stagnated score highlights a global trend of deteriorating justice systems, which is reducing the accountability of public officials and therefore allowing corruption to thrive.” Continue reading >>>
