Freda Prempeh, Gifty Twum-Ampofo lose Tano North and Abuakwa North NPP Primaries

The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs. Freda Prempeh who is the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North and MP for Abuakwa North, who doubles as the deputy minister for Education, Gifty Twum-Ampofo have both lost their bid to represent the NPP in their respective constituencies.

In the Tano North constituency, Madam Prempeh lost the primary to the Spokesperson of the Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The incumbent MP polled 221 votes while Gideon Boako polled 444 votes emerged winner.

The deputy Education Minister polled 202 votes while Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong popularly known as Buffalo polled 222 votes to win the parliamentary primary.

A prominent figure in Ghana’s security and governance, Palgrave Boakye Danquah polled 76 votes while Nana Kwame Mamfe had four votes.

Meanwhile, the hopes of the Controller and Accountant General, Mr. Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, have been dashed as he has lost in the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Akim Swedru parliamentary primary.

He secured 94 votes against the incumbent MP Kennedy Osei, who had 194, whereas Okyere Jerome Kwame polled 10.

The race in the constituency became topical after the Controller and Accountant General declared his intention to contest the seat.

While he enjoyed some backing and endorsement from high-profile personalities, politicians, religious leaders, and civil society organizations. Others also kicked against his decision, calling for his resignation or removal from office.

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) Ghana demanded his immediate removal from office for allegedly breaching the Civil Service Act, PNDC Law 327.

The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, on January 10, 2024, filed a lawsuit against Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem.

Board Member of Ghana Gas Company and a private legal Practitioner, John Darko, has emerged victorious in the Suame NPP Parliamentary Primaries.

He polled 491 out of the 914 ballots cast to defeat his closest contender, Mr. Maxwell Osei Boakye.

Correspondent Nicholas Osei-Wusu reports that Mr. Osei Boakye, who is the Suame AME Municipal Chief Executive, polled 410 of the valid votes cast with Pius Acheampong- getting only five votes.

The other Candidate, Kwabena Adubofuor had three votes with five rejected ballots. With this win, Lawyer John Darko is likely
to succeed one of Ghana’s longest serving Members of Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu who retires at the end of the present Parliament in January 2025.

Speaking to GBCNews in his victory speech, Mr. Darko pledged to unite the rank and file of the party in the Constituency to help the NPP increase its votes in the December 7 elections.

Meanwhile, in the Manhyia North Constituency, the Incumbent MP, Kwasi Konadu won with 389 votes as against 283 polled by his immediate predecessor, Collins Owusu Amankwaah. The 3rd Candidate, Nana Bamfo had 15 out of the total of 691 ballots cast.
