Director General, Mr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has indicated that there is progress on achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3, which includes the promise made by Member States to achieve the end of AIDS by 2030.
In his opening address at the 154th session of the Executive Board on Monday 22nd January 2024, Mr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said…
“We are now beginning to see a path towards the SDG target of ending the HIV epidemic.”
According to Mr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, more than 75% of people living with HIV globally are now receiving antiretroviral therapy, and almost all of those on treatment are achieving viral suppression, which means they cannot infect others.
He added that Australia became the first country to announce that it is close to the virtual elimination of HIV transmission, in inner Sydney.
In Zimbabwe, integrating services for HIV and sexual and reproductive health led to seven times more women being screened for HIV and sexually transmitted infections.
Meanwhile, on hepatitis, Egypt became the first country to achieve “gold tier” status on the path to elimination of hepatitis C. This is a historic milestone.

The Executive Board comprises 34 technically qualified members elected for three years. The main functions of the Board are to implement the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly and to advise and generally facilitate its work.
