On September 15, the Volta River Authority (VRA) commenced the spilling of excess water due to rising levels of the Akosombo and Kpong Hydro dams.

Weeks after the spillage started, many residents living along the Lower Volta Basin lost their homes and farms to the floods caused.

The safe alternative housing is to provide accommodation for up to 300 people in the North Tongu District in the Volta Region displaced by flood following the recent Akosombo Dam spillage.

Since the commencement of the project, there has been support from various individuals and organizations with the latest one being Madam Florence Aning, who presented a cheque of GHS5,500 to Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency.

Expressing his appreciation after receiving the presentation, the lawmaker posted this on his Facebook page. >>>

I am deeply touched by the extraordinary gesture of kindness from 78-year-old Madam Florence Aning who apparently has insisted that our Safe Alternative Housing Project must not be completed without her personal financial contribution.

It turns out Madam Aning had been looking for me for weeks and finally succeeded in finding me today having driven all by herself.

With her beautiful handwriting and incredibly sharp mind, she wrote a cheque for GHS5,500.

I am so moved by Grandma’s outstanding compassion and unparalleled tenacity that I have decided to honour her by naming our TV & Meeting Room after Madam Florence Aning when the housing project is completed in a few days.

God richly bless her and grant her more years in good health and abundance.

In this together, rising together.🇬🇭🙏🏾

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has donated GH¢70,000 as seed money, which is being used to facilitate the project at Mepe in the district.

Before this, the Islamic cleric was among those who donated towards the care of the people, many of whom were rendered homeless during the two months the flood persisted.

When ready, a block of the facility is to be named after Sheikh Dr Sharubutu in appreciation of his gesture.
