HUNDREDS STRUGGLE FOR SPACE TO WATCH KAYAYEI TUG OF WAR CHAMPIONSHIP AT AGBOGBLOSHIE

The maiden edition of the Kayayei Tug of War Championship has been successfully held at Agbogloshi, a suburb of Accra with hundreds of Kayayei coming out in their numbers to witness their colleagues ”Push & Pull To Stardom”.

As the competition got more and more intense, some people among the spectators could not find space to stand, to catch a glimpse of their favourite team in action.

Many had no option but to climb and sit or stand on top of tricycles and cargo cars that were parked near the venue only to witness the games.

Though the maiden edition, the enthusiasm, and zeal that characterize the event is commendable.

Apart from the number of teams that expressed interest in participating in the competition, the high turnout in terms of spectators both male and female from all walks of life within Agbogbloshie, Timber Market, CMB, Tema Station, and the Central Business District, Okaishie leaves much to be desired.

The event was put together by the Tug Of War Association of Ghana (GHATOWA) under the auspices of the National Sports Council and was supported by Equator Foods Ghana Limited and the One On One Foundation led by Frank Mensah.

According to organisers, the four teams that qualified to the semi-finals stage namely, Kanjo Posaa Girls, KKNT Girls, Nyankpado Girls and Bignalib Girls will all receive further training during a special “Justify Your Inclusion” training programme designed to select a team for the upcoming Africa Tug of War Championship in Zimbabwe in June 2024.

In the Third and Fourth place battle, Bignanlib defeated Nankpando to secure the third position after losing to KKNT in the semifinal battle, leaving Nyankpado Girls in the 4th position.

At the end of the programme, Kanjo Posaa defeated KKNT during the final battle, pulling 2 straight again, to be crowned champions of the day with KKNT automatically taking the second position.

Rewarding their efforts, Kanjo Posaa, the champions took away 700ghc cash, Medals, T-Shirts, and products from sponsors as the ultimate prize.

The second prize of 500ghc cash, Medals, T-Shirts, and products from sponsors went to KKNT and

The third prize comprising 300ghc cash, Medals, T-shirts and products from sponsors went to Bignalib.

Nankpando which took the fourth position went home with Ghc200.00 and some products from sponsors.

Speaking to betterghanadigest.com, the Manager and trainer of Kanjo Posaa expressed his team’s appreciation to the organisers and sponsors for the opportunity given to the girls.

He called on the corporate community to support GHATOWA by providing sponsorship for their competitions to enable them to offer very attractive prizes. He added that when the prize or rewards are attractive, many more people will seriously consider taking up a career in the sport.

The event which started at 11 am and ended at around 3 pm was also attended by some dignatories from Agbogbloshie including Solomon Ndaranam who was the MC for the day as well as the Chairman of the Cargo Drivers Association in Agbogbloshie and his entourage.

Officials on the day included Mr. Charles Oteng Acquah, Juliana Kwaning, Portia and Shina, Nana Yaw, and Mr. Emmanuel Olla Williams, Tagoe, all from the Ghana Tug of War Association (GHATOWA).
