Head porters (Kayayei) in Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra will on December 24th participate in the maiden edition of the Kayayei Tug of War Championship in which
The event organised by the Ghana Tug of War Association (GHATOWA) is expected to bring together over 500 kayayei.
According to Mr. Emmanuel Olla Williams, Founder, and President of GHATOWA, the idea is to inspire the head porters not to limit themselves to their current occupation but rather try to engage in activities that provide the opportunity for them to unearth their God-given talents to enable them to become responsible and more productive citizens in future,
Speaking with Sellassie K.A. Sokpe of betterghanadigest.com, Mr. Olla Williams said that even though the role “Kayayei” play in the trading sector of the Ghanaian economy can not be downplayed, they still possess a lot of talents that when harnessed could go a long way to help transform their lives and eventually bring development in diverse ways particularly back home where they come from.
He called on the business community, particularly traders in major markets across Ghana to support the Association to organise more of such programmes for them since it also provides a platform to promote their business and products.
Mr. Charles Oteng Acquah, an official of GHATOWA said that in spite of the fact that the program was being hosted at Agbogbloshie, other Kayayei from the various market centres in Accra including Malata, Madina, Ashaiman, CMB, Tema Station Kanshie, etc. will also come and take part.
The event which was initially scheduled for November 21st but had to be postponed will take place at Agbogbloshie Konkomba Yam Market on between the hours of 9:00am to 1:00pm,
