24-hour economy under NDC beyond “night economy” – Nii Yarboi Annan

Mr. Michael Nii Yarboi Annan says we cannot seek a prosperous nation that works 8 hours a day and go sleeping for the rest of the hours.

Reacting to critics of the NDC’s 24-Hour Economy Policy, he stated that the 24-hour economy goes beyond the night economy as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicators seem to understand.

According to Mr. Yarboi Annan, the night economy started in the 1800s when the lightbulb was invented with the increase of fixed costs such as rent and fixed assets. It became necessary to have the textile mills, steel mills, iron foundries, and flour mills work 13-hour shifts nonstop.

This was then called the night economy, but after World War II, the US and UK needed to rebuild their economy and provide jobs to it people.

They found out that the 13-hour shift was causing more accidents and therefore the 2 direct shift time was expanded to 3-shift system of 5 hours each in order to encourage businesses to employ more, incentives were added such as lower tax rates for employees working in the night. Businesses were given meters that charged lower rates of electricity and water at night and so on.

He called on the Ghanaian not to make the mistake of taking the NPP and its communicators seriously with regard to whatever they say, bearing in mind all the lies they peddled against the NDC prior to the 2016 general elections as well as the empty promises they made during the 2016 and 2020 electioneering campaign.
