Over 200,000 delegates are expected to decide on four candidates as the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) chooses a flagbearer for the 2024 general election on November 4, 2023.

The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, and majority leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, says “I will be surprised if my colleague Kennedy Agyapong gets even 20% in the presidential primaries.”

The Majority Leader who also doubles as a Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency in the Ashanti region said this when predicting the probable outcome of Saturday’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Primaries, particularly regarding Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s performance.

The leader of the Majority side in Parliament who took his turn on M’abato, a current affairs political show on Akoma FM, also stated, “Kennedy Agyapong would not even get 15% in the Ashanti Region.”

Bawumia impresses
Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic acumen is unquestionable and he is the right person to change the economic situation.

Some polls have put the Vice President ahead with a colossal percentage.

Some political analysts have opined that the majority of the members of Parliament are supporting Bawumia’s bid because they would not want to be taking instructions from their former colleague in Parliament.

However, a campaign team member, Oliver Amoako says Hon. Kennedy Agyapong’s Vision and Personality Resonate with Ghanaians.

Amoako stressed that this is why Mr. Agyapong’s “strength is in the grassroots” and he is confident that he will be chosen to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the country.

In an interview on Point of View on Citi TV on Wednesday, Amoako told Selorm Adonoo that Mr. Agyapong is the kind of person Ghanaians need in these difficult and trying times to lead them to betterment.

“Kennedy Agyapong belongs to the grassroots and for him, that is where his strength is. So for us, we are just waiting for November 4,” Amoako said.

“Where we are as a country, the personality of Kennedy Agyapong and his vision resonate with the youth and the masses,” he added.

Meanwhile, ahead of the November 4 primaries, a leading member of the party, Dr. Arthur Kennedy, has called on delegates to look out for the country’s interest, not for a candidate who would give them money.

“They should be looking out for the NPP’s interest, rather than the interest of those who have led the most vibrant political party in sub-Saharan Africa to the edge of bankruptcy and discredit. That is what delegates should be doing.”

Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has also said the basis for voting for a candidate in an election should be competence, not religion.

He believes that the key determinant in an election should be one’s ability to bring prosperity to the people.

Speaking to artisans and delegates of the Manhyia South constituency NPP in Manhyia on Friday, October 27, 2023, Dr. Prempeh said that Ghana has a long history of peaceful coexistence among all religions and that it is dangerous for anyone to play the religious card during any election, whether internal party elections or national elections.

“I, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, was named after a Muslim, and the Regional Chief Imam of the Ashanti Region is my brother. This should tell you that in my family, some are Christians and some are Muslims. This situation also exists in many families. It is therefore unacceptable to create partitions and divisions on religious lines,” he said.
