The Dano Milk Coastal Fisher-folks Tug of War Championship came off last Saturday the 30th of September at the Okpo Tsu Park inside Korle Gonno, Accra.

The event which started at about 11 am had six participating teams drawn from within the Coastal Communities in Korle Gonno and Mamprobi, namely Anything Anything, Ata Adjei, Gyata from Korle Gonno, Sempe One and Two from Mamprobi, and Kakalilka.

At the end of the final contest, Gyata took the day by pulling two straight against Anything Anything who were however adjudged the Best Team of the Championship.

Nii Tackie Owuowuo IV, Korle Gonno Mantse accompanied by the Queen mother of Korle Gonno, Naa Arfua Oklopong I presented Medals, Trophies as well as products from Dano Milk on behalf of the organizers to the winning teams.

After the presentation of the medals and awards to the deserving teams, Nii Tackie Owuowuo IV, the Korle Gonno Mantse called on the Government to pay attention to the promotion of Tug of War across the country since it does not require huge investments unlike Soccer and other so-called major sports.

According to him, Tug of War requires 10 pullers and a maximum of 5 members of the technical team and therefore you do not need to spend so much maintaining the team. Again, you only need a few ropes, and sporting kit for the team.

Nii Tackie Owuowuo IV was of the opinion that the game could serve as an additional source of income for the fishermen, adding that it is similar to traditional indigenous fishing.

Speaking with the media after the event, the Captain of the Dzata team from Korley Gonno said they were happy because their aim was to host and win. He expressed their gratitude to the organizers and sponsors for giving them the opportunity.

He took the opportunity to appeal to the leadership of the Ghana Tug Of War Association (GHATOWA) to try as much as possible to provide them with the facilities required to enable them to prepare adequately for the National Championship in December this year.

Anything Anything, which placed second has also qualified for the National Championship.
