Hon. Dafeamekpor Files Suit Against Dr. Peter Appiahene Over His Alleged NPP Affiliation

South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has filed a suit against Dr. Peter Appiahene, a member of the Electoral Commission (EC), over party affiliation.

The South Dayi MP accuses him of having ties to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In his suit, Mr. Dafeamekpor contends that Dr. Appiahene’s alleged affiliation violates Ghana’s constitution, which explicitly prohibits EC members from openly aligning themselves with any registered political party in the country.

The controversy surrounding Dr Appiahene’s appointment started in March 2023, when President Akufo-Addo swore in three new members of the electoral management body, including Dr. Appiahene.

However, the appointment faced criticism from civil society organizations, such as the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), the Star-Ghana Foundation, and the Civic Forum Initiative (CFI).

These organizations jointly held a news conference, urging Dr. Appiahene to step down since his appointment was in violation of the constitution.

Among other things, Mr. Dafeamekpor is seeking the revocation of Dr. Appiahene’s appointment.

Also, a request for an interlocutory injunction, aiming to prevent Dr. Appiahene from assuming his role or presenting himself as a member of the EC until the case is resolved.

Additionally, a permanent injunction restraining President Akufo-Addo from acknowledging Dr. Appiahene as an EC member.
