Honourable member of parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has lauded former President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to run a lean Government when the NDC is voted back into power in December 2024.

The lawmaker, made his observations via his Twitter page shortly after H.E. John Dramani Mahama delivered his acceptance speech at a special event organised at the University of Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale on Monday the 15th of May 2024, two days after the party held its presidential and parliamentary Primaries.

John Dramani Mahama, in his acceptance speech, reiterated his commitment to appoint not more than sixty ministers and deputy ministers to form his government. He said the decision is to reduce Government expenditure. He also said he would ensure that all appointees are made to sign an undertaking, forfeiting their ex-gratia after serving in their various positions in Government.

Reacting to this announcement, Samuel Okudeto Ablakwa in his tweet welcomed the idea adding that it will save the Ghanaian taxpayer over GHS350 million.

John Mahama’s inspiring & patriotic pledge to appoint not more than 60 Ministers & Deputies, and to prevent all his appointees from receiving ex-gratia payments, will at current conditions of service potentially save the Ghanaian taxpayer an impressive GHS350 million in 4 years.

There have been concerns over the huge number of appointees under the current New Patriotic Party Government with many political commentators calling on the President to take steps to reduce the number of these appointments.

According to John Mahama, there was a need for Ghanaians to vote out the NPP because they had no intentions of listening to their concerns. He recounted the fact that just a fortnight ago, Parliament recalled members from recess to approve an additional $700 million loan, at a time the nation was grappling to pay its already abnormally high debts, to the extent that government has to undertake a debt restructuring program before it could get an IMF bailout.

The NDC’s Flagbearer for Election 2024 added that just recently the President apart from appointing more commissioners to the Electoral Commission, he has also appointed a CEO for Mortuaries and Funerals.

He called on Ghanaians to vote out the NPP come December 7th 2024 in order to prevent the NPP from further worsening the already economic mess they have led the country into.

We cannot allow them to continue holding Ghana’s progress in reverse gear. Ghana is not for a few people alone. Ghana is for us all and the unborn generations.

We must rise like the phoenix rising from ashes; renew, reform, and liberate ourselves from their misrule on December 07, 2024. This is why I am running for president in 2024. And this is why you voted massively for me on Saturday, May 13, 2023.
