The National Democratic Congress is a social democratic political party in Ghana, founded by Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings, who was Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President of Ghana from 1993 to 2001.

In 1992, the National Democratic Congress led the successful transition to multi-party democracy. The NDC won the 1992 and 1996 elections.

The party just like all political parties in Ghana, is governed by a Constitution which came into force on the 19th of September 1992.

The symbol of the Party is the umbrella, which is known in Akan as AKATAMANSO (UMBRELLA). This symbol is an umbrella with the head of an eagle at the tip.

The party colors are red, white, green, and black, and the party slogan or motto is “Unity, stability, and development.” Internationally, the NDC is a member of the Progressive Alliance and Socialist International.
