Hon. Sedem Afenyo-NDCs Parliamentary Candidate for Amasaman Constituency

The Amansaman Constituency is one of the keenly contested seats as far as the NDC Parliamentary primaries slated for this Saturday is concerned.

There are nine persons who are vigorously campaigning to be elected as Parliamentary Candidate to represent the NDC on the parliamentary ballot sheet in the 2024 general elections in the Amasaman Constituency.

The nine aspirants that have successfully filed and been vetted, not in any particular order are: William Ahamadzi, Sedem Kwaku Afenyo (the 2020 PC), Precious Kwaku Senafiawu, Samuel Atsu Forson, and Martin Nii Aryee Tagoe.

The rest are Henry Nii-Chartey Marble, Alhaji Mamudu, Ernest George Thompson, and Emmanuel Quashie.

The delegates have the huge task to elect a candidate that has the capacity to wrestle the seat from the ruling New Patriotic Party, who are yet to organise their primaries to select a flag bearer and the various parliamentary candidates.

Amongst the 9 candidates, Sedem Kweku Afenyo has been tipped by many as the man to look out for considering the fact that he is already popular amongst the general population and for that matter is more marketable with regards to the 2024 general elections.

The Amasaman Constituency was considered a stronghold of the NDC until Honourable Mensah took over in 2020 from Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea, an incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Amasaman Constituency, who has occupied the seat on the ticket of the NDC since 2012.

Sedem Afenyo lost to the 49-year-old accountant, in the December 7, Parliamentary election by 3,123 votes. The total number of ballots cast was 112,714, with the Progressive Peoples Party’s (PPP) Felix Adofo polling 371 votes while Michael Adjei Mensah who contested on the ticket of the National Democratic Party (NDP) polled 186.

The NPP, however, won the presidential election in the constituency with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo polling 56,735 votes to finish ahead of candidate John Dramani Mahama who got 54,655 votes.

Even though, it was his first attempt at the seat, Sedem Afenyo’s performance was quite credible. Considering his impressive performance, it is strongly believed that he will be able to do better in his second attempt, thereby increasing the prospects of the NDC in the general elections.

Prior to becoming the party’s Parliamentary Candidate in 2020, Sedem Afenyo has been a member of the NDC, working for the NDC as a branch secretary, ward secretary, and constituency executive member before taking the decision to contest for the primaries in August 2020 and eventually won to contest the parliamentary seat on the ticket of his party.

He has also made various contributions and donations towards a number of community development projects in various towns within the Amasaman Constituency including Kojo Ashong, Osuru Dompe, Okyere Komfo and so on.
