Minerals and Mining Policy of Ghana

This Minerals and Mining Policy is a nationwide sectoral document aiming at establishing a comprehensive and forward-looking framework for mining that catalyses sustainable development.

The overall goal will be achieved through the following strategic objectives

  • diversify the country’s mineral production;
  • promote linkages to minerals produced locally to the maximum extent possible;
  • generate adequate geo-scientific data to promote investment;
  • generate detailed geological information in designated areas for demarcation to artisanal and small scale miners;
  • provide opportunities for artisanal and small scale miners to access financing;
  • enhance capacity in the management and development of mineral resources;
  • optimize tax revenue generation and ensure transparent and equitable distribution of mineral wealth;
  • assist in the development of skilled human resource and develop local industrial capacity;
  • contribute to infrastructure development in mining areas;
  • use mining as a catalyst for wider investment in the economy;
  • ensure high level of environmental stewardship in the exploitation and use of minerals; and
  • promote social harmony between the mines and adjoining communities; and
  • promote good governance and transparency in the extractive sector.
