This Minerals and Mining Policy is a nationwide sectoral document aiming at establishing a comprehensive and forward-looking framework for mining that catalyses sustainable development.
The overall goal will be achieved through the following strategic objectives
- diversify the country’s mineral production;
- promote linkages to minerals produced locally to the maximum extent possible;
- generate adequate geo-scientific data to promote investment;
- generate detailed geological information in designated areas for demarcation to artisanal and small scale miners;
- provide opportunities for artisanal and small scale miners to access financing;
- enhance capacity in the management and development of mineral resources;
- optimize tax revenue generation and ensure transparent and equitable distribution of mineral wealth;
- assist in the development of skilled human resource and develop local industrial capacity;
- contribute to infrastructure development in mining areas;
- use mining as a catalyst for wider investment in the economy;
- ensure high level of environmental stewardship in the exploitation and use of minerals; and
- promote social harmony between the mines and adjoining communities; and
- promote good governance and transparency in the extractive sector.
