John Mahama, a former president, was the first to select nomination forms for the presidential primaries of the NDC towards the 2024 General elections.
According to Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a senior lecturer in political science at the University of Ghana Legon, John Dramani Mahama is eligible to compete for the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s flagbearer ticket in 2024.
He stated that as long as the former president is in the race, the other candidates would not be able to surpass him.
When nominations for the May 13 Presidential Primary opened on February 22, Mr. Mahama picked forms to lead the NDC into yet another election, his fourth in a row.
Former challenger Professor Joshua Alabi picked the forms on his behalf, assuring other competitors of a level playing field.
“I am reassuring the other contestants that everything will go smoothly, that we love them all, and that at the end we are going to invite them all for victory,”
Dr. Asah-Asante stated on Ghana Tonight on TV3 on Wednesday that any NDC candidate can only campaign on the legacy of three leaders: Jerry John Rawlings, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, both of whom have passed away, and John Dramani Mahama.
“Also, if Mahama is one of the contestants, I fear that none of them will ever be able to beat John Mahama.
It is abundantly clear that Mahama is very far away from those who will challenge him. That is without a doubt.”
He said, however, that while the candidates have their own accomplishments, politics is a referendum on one’s work in addition to a contest of ideas, so they have no accomplishments to show for the party.
Three candidates have selected forms for the primaries so far.
Kojo Bonsu and Ernest Kwaku Kobeah have also submitted the forms in addition to the former President, who is anticipated to win the votes.
On Thursday, February 23, close contender Dr. Kwabena Duffour is expected to select his forms.
