Dr. Duffuor says that the government’s handling of the domestic debt exchange program, which was recently completed, is evidence that new management is required.
He says that the same people he thinks are to blame for the mess right now can’t fix it. In an interview with Joynews’ Joseph Ackah-Blay, he made these remarks.
When Dr. Duffuor was asked if he agreed with former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo that Ken Ofori-Atta’s performance as Finance Minister has not been impressive, he said, “Yes.”
According to Raymond Acquah of Joynews, the retired judge said that the Minister’s poor performance is evidence of the current state of Ghana’s finances.
Sophia Akuffo says, “Ken Ofori-Atta has been very disappointing as Finance Minister.” “We borrowed more than $15 billion for eight years as a nation.” That’s a lot of money. We would be in a better position right now if this had been invested in projects that should generate their own revenue. Dr. Duffuor said, “So the former Chief Justice has a point.”
Dr. Duffuor stated that change is necessary when asked directly if he was surprised that Ken Ofori-Atta was still in his position.
He explained, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness.”
Further, Dr. Duffuor was asked if he thought the Minister should be fired.
The team, not just him, the management team (Economic Management Team), which includes the Finance Minister, caused the issue. Can they address the issue? Especially when I hear some of them say that we could have borrowed two or three billion dollars if we hadn’t been kicked out of the financial market. This indicates that the same level of consciousness that caused the issue has not yet recognized that we have one, he responded.
